The Federation Council explained the ban on St. George ribbons in Latvia

The Federation Council condemned the adoption by the Saeima of Latvia in the first reading of a bill prohibiting the use of St. George ribbons in the country. It seems to me that the St. George ribbon calluses the eyes of those who would not like to recall that shameful part of the history of Latvia itself, said Konstantin Kosachev, head of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, on Facebook. He recalled the operation "Winter Magic" by total cleaning of civilians in the Belarusian-Latvian border to block Soviet partisans, when a 40 kilometer dead zone was created and for this purpose 430 villages were burned, 10 12 thousand people were cut out (mainly civilians: women, old people and children), the strike forces of the punitive operation amounted to Latvian battalions. The descendants of Latvian punishers, of course, do not have their St. George ribbon as a symbol of military glory. And it will never be, the senator concluded. As previously reported by the news agency, on September 17, the Latvian Sejm considered amendments to the law on the safety of public entertainment and festive events and the law on meetings, processions and pickets, which provide for a ban on the wearing and use of St. George ribbons at public events.
